Building our Bungalow - Project Update

Hello and Happy Holidays!  I thought I would take a few minutes and give you a bit of an update and a sneak peak of some of the inspirational pictures that we used to design our home.

This kitchen (left side of photo) was designed by Nam Dang Mitchell.  I liked how she used dark stained bead board in the open shelving below the cabinets, so I decided to do that in our kitchen beside the space where the refrigerator will go, except taking it all the way from the backsplash right up to the top of the cabinets.  The cabinets will be all glass.

Here is the start of "fridge wall" and the beadboard backsplash cabinets.

This photo I found on "Houzz", this is the inspiration for our pantry area desk just off the kitchen.

And here is the start. There will be a few modifications like a cork board and crown moulding to match the rest of the kitchen and mudroom lockers.

The above 2 photos were the inspiration for the mudroom lockers.

Ours will have doors & drawers all across the bottom, but we'll keep the top open for basket storage.

Here are the doors, we went with a traditional 3 panel shaker style look throughout the house.

Here is where the freestanding tub will go- can't wait to see the wainscoting painted!

Our own design - The walk-up bar in the media area on the walk-out level.

Well, I hope you enjoyed our little update. More to share with you soon!

Building Our Bungalow - Project Update

It's been awhile and some of you have asked us about what's happening, so here is a little update for you.

We have been crazy busy making decisions about finishes and working with our carpenter to finalize the details for all the built-ins.  We haven't had time for much else really.  The house was shrouded in a big orange tarp for awhile, but the stucco is almost complete! Now that the tarp is removed the light is coming back into the house and we can see the view again!

The drywall and primer is complete, and the finishers have arrived and have started all the woodwork.

Here are a couple of photos taken today.

Stucco almost completed.

Building our Bungalow - Update

Well we just got back from a 21 day trip in France so haven't had a chance to update until today.  The house has been moving along quite nicely since we were away.

The windows are in, although not all the grills are on yet, the front door has arrived, the electical is almost complete, and the fireplaces are in.  The stucco guy is preparing the house so that should be started shortly as well. Drywalling should start sometime next week.

I have been out and about looking at flooring & tile.  I should have some selections to share with you soon.

Building our Bungalow - Framing Part 2

Here is a quick update on our new home.  It's really starting to look like a house now, and with the interior walls almost up, we can get a real feel for how it's going to look.  After seeing things in place, we are going to make a few slight changes, like the shower. The shower felt like a bit of a cave, so with a few slight adjustments, it should be fine.

The fireplace looks huge!

Building our Bungalow - Framing

Changes are happening daily with house.  Over the past week, walls have appeared on the lower level, and the main floor and west wall have been put up.

Building our Bungalow - Foundation

Ok, here is a little update for everyone who has been asking.  We have been busy picking and choosing fireplaces, plumbing fixtures and appliances.  Have we made all the decisons yet? Absolutely not!  We're going back on forth and a few things, kinda like this...

Anyhow, we finally did make some appliance decisions which I will share in a future post.  In the meantime, the bones of the home are continuing to to emerge.  Over the past couple of weeks, the cribbing was completed, the concrete walls poured, and  house backfilled.  Here are a few updated photos!

We were over at the lot today and to our surprise, they had already started framing!  Now it's really starting to look like a house.  All in all, things are moving along pretty well, and so far we have been very lucky with the beautiful weather.  Have a great week everyone!!

Building Our Bungalow - Cribbing

We just got back from our trip to Ontario, and it looks like things are moving along as the cribbing has started.

Doesn't look like much here, but the hole is bigger than before...

This would be the garage...

This is the SE corner where the Master bedroom & bath will be.

Tomorrow we're heading out shopping for fireplaces & appliances.  I'll let you know what we come up with!

Building our Bungalow - Excavation

After numerous changes to our plans, and going back and forth as to whether to go ahead or not, we have decided to move forward and start building our walk-out bungalow!

The "digger" arrived on our lot yesterday and started to move some dirt around.  I'm guessing today we'll have a much bigger hole on the property, so we'll share those pictures with you later.

Needless to say, we are pretty excited, and looking forward to the next 10 or so months!!  Stay tuned for more!!

Keep Calm and Carry On - The Story

I'm sure most of you have seen this poster somewhere, but do you know the story behind it? I read an article about it and it's really quite interesting. There is also a YouTube video about it so I thought I would share it with you.  Enjoy!
